We were blessed during the weekend of November 22nd to host Barbara Georgi from Montreal to speak at the Youth Group as well as theJ.O.Y. meeting. Barbara, who suffered a horrible accident this summer while serving in Kenya and lost part of her arm, witnessed in front of many youth and congregation members about God and how He had done many miracles for her. One of her greatest quotes was "I decided not to give up on God". Her testimony was of great encouragement and inspiration for so many people who asked her questions and interacted with her. Most of our own Kenya Mission members were present in both presentations as they lived the events of the horrible bus accident with the Montreal team this summer. We are thankful for Barbara's strong faith and her inspirational message to our youth and congregation and we pray for her full healing and recovery.
The church launched its second annual mini-series of Evangelism Training Workshops on November 7, 14 & 21, from 7-9 p.m., at the church office training room in Markham. The workshops were designed to train us to acquire more comfort when speaking to people about Jesus Christ, particularly to those who are not of the Christian faith. Fr. Pishoy launched the first session on “Characteristics of Orthodox Evangelism,” while Fr. Daniel facilitated sessions two and three on “Answers to Tough Questions” and “Sharing Your Testimony with Bible Verses,” respectively. A delicious pizza dinner was provided to all attendants and the workshop concluded with preparations for SMSV’s upcoming Survey Evangelism Christmas Carol Outing Saturday, December 14. For more information, or to register for the outing, please email email@example.com.
SMSV & SMSK hosted their 2nd Annual Young Women's Retreat at DoubleTree Fallsview Resort & Spa in Niagara Falls on November 16th-17th, 2013. We were blessed by the presence and leadership of Tasoni Debbie Hanna, Tasoni Mary Boutros and Tasoni Sarah Milad (who joined us all the way from Maryland). We spent a beautiful weekend together focussed on the theme of "A Woman's Worth" based on the characteristics of a Proverbs 31 woman. We also enjoyed an amazing presentation and activity organized by the Women's Ministry as well as a blessed talk by Father Daniel and a surprise visit from Father David Milad (also joining us from Maryland). Through God's grace, it was a time filled with great fellowship and spiritual growth. We thank God for all His wonderful blessings throughout the retreat and we are already looking forward to next year's retreat, God willing.
In a glorious ceremony at St. Mark's Cathedral in Cairo, presided b H.H. Pope Tawadros II and attended by 84 bishops, H.G. Bishop David was appointed as the Bishop of New York and New England in the North East of the United States of America. His Holiness shared with the attending congregation the biography of H.G. Bishop David which included dates of his birth, immigration to Canada with family, education, monasticism, serving in the UK, ordination as bishop, ministry at the Archdiocese in NJ, and two Masters Degrees. His Holiness also mentioned how much Bishop David is loved by young and old and his success in winning souls to Christ. Following Vespers Raising of Incense, His Holiness held a private meeting with all of Bishop David's guests from USA and Canada. Many words of love were shared by the attending clergy and laity thanking His Holiness for enthroning Bishop David for their Diocese. The congregation and clergy of SMSV send their warmest congratulations to our beloved father H.G. Bishop David, thanking him for his faithful effort in establishing and overseeing our church since it's inception. May our Lord keep his priesthood for many more years to come, thorough the prayers of our beloved shepherd H.H. Pope Tawadros II.
The church Youth Group took in a game of NBA basketball on November 15th between the Toronto Raptors and the Chicago Bulls at the Air Canada Centre. Great fun was had by all and many new friendships were formed. May God build upon our faith so we may all grow to be examples and witnesses of the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Fr. Pishoy met with our beloved father H.H. Pope Tawadros II at St. Mark's Cathedral in Cairo on Tuesday, November 12th. The meeting which lasted over 45 minutes was blessed with many conversations around the church ministry, evangelism, church construction, and much more. Fr. Pishoy started by congratulation His Holiness for the first anniversary of his enthronement and thanking him for his continuous care and prayers to our congregation. His Holiness was eager to hear updates about the ongoing ministry and the latest news about the church growth. Fr. Pishoy shared with His Holiness many pictures representing the different activities offered by the church and explanation of our outreach programs. His Holiness was really happy that we started building the church and promised to bless us during his visit to Toronto in September 2014. His Holiness also encouraged us by recording a special message to thank our congregation for their great leadership and faithful ministry. Overall, this was an amazing opportunity to receive the apostolic blessings from our father and shepherd to our congregation. May our Lord preserve for us the life and standing of our beloved father H.H. Pope Tawadros II for many more peaceful years.
The church started a weekly basketball training for our children and youth on Sundays from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm at Brebeuf School. The participants get to enjoy a time of training and friendly competition under the supervision of professional coaches. This will be the first step towards forming professional teams that would be able to compete in conventions and tournaments. For registration, contact Ihab, Michael or Mark at firstname.lastname@example.org. God bless this ministry for the glory of His holy name.
The church held a Community Movie Night at Brebeuf School on Saturday, November 9th for everyone to join and invite friends. Featuring the movie Courageous, the plot was about four men whose calling was to serve and protect. When tragedy struck home, these men were left wrestling with their hopes, fears, faith, and fathering. Protecting the streets was second nature while raising their children in a God-honouring way was courageous. Father Daniel, the congregation and fellow guests enjoyed a brief discussion hosted by the Men’s Ministry; a Small Groups testimony by Marian Shehata; a Come and See meditation by Barbara Mikhail; and finally, fellowship along with snacks and refreshments. The event also provided an opportunity for interested participants and hosts to sign up for Advent Small Groups. We thank everyone who helped organize the event and pray that God may bless us, empowering us to be courageous for Him in all we do. "Taste and see that the Lord is good". On Sunday November 3rd, the Women's Ministry held their first "Bake Off"! Several ladies of all ages prepared delicious treats like cultural sweets, cakes, cupcakes, cookies and cake pops. They showed their God-given talent and creativity in both baking and decorating the treats. Members of the congregation enjoyed sampling the different sweets and voted for their favourites. We look forward to the next one!
The church held a gathering at Brebeuf School on Thursday, October 31st for children and parents. The program included many activities for children such as face painting, challenging Bible trivia, which saint am I, and concluded with a Bible Study for all ages. Fr. Daniel and Fr. Pishoy also held a meeting with the parents at the same time to discuss: Parenting and Media in a Digital Generation. In this meeting, many ideas were explored on how to benefit from Media as well as being careful of harmful images or addictions that our children may be exposed to. Everyone shared together in an agape meal, received loot bags, and enjoyed the fellowship. We are thankful that this year our youth showed great leadership skills in preparing all the children's activities and leading them.
The church regularly shares in reaching out to University students through campus ministry. Fr. Pishoy met with the Coptic Club members at UTSC on Wednesday, October 30th where they prepared many questions that were shared ahead of the discussion. The topics included: The Church view on Theistic Evolution, the story of Creation, Angels, Satan, Judas, Salvation, Sacraments, the End of Times, and Judgement Day. The two and half hour meeting was filled with intellectual and spiritual discussions which showed the deep spiritual maturity of the participating students. The meeting concluded with a promise to continue answering the remaining questions in another meeting soon, Lord willing. May our Lord bless all of our youth who are reflecting God's image and witnessing to Him on campus.
The W.W.L. Worship team members met together on Saturday, October 26th to give thanks to God for a spiritually uplifting ministry during the Outreach Nights and Thanksgiving Retreat. The faithful ministry of each member of the team contributed to the overall enjoyment and spirituality of the weekend events. Francella Brown presented each member with a verse which best reflected their talents and qualities. Fr. Pishoy shared a few words on the sacred ministry of praising and worshiping God which resembles the Cherubim and Seraphim. The team also enjoyed a time of fellowship and fun. May our Lord bless our worship team who is extremely dedicated to serving the Lord in every occasion.
